Sometime in the future, I expect Mayor Osman to propose a one cent sales tax to support his municipal pool project. I hope we take an opposing stance on this proposal. In this time of high gas prices and higher food prices, another tax is the last thing we need.
Mayor Osmon can propose a tax to pay for a pool, but that doesn’t mean it will be approved by the city council. If the council doesn’t approve it, it will not be put on the fall ballot. I doubt there is much support for “his” tax, but who knows? The thing to remember here, though, is that even if it SHOULD get past the city council, the voters of MH will decide the issue — not JUST the mayor, not JUST the city council.
As far as BCFT’s position goes, we believe that those who want an indoor facility should be the ones to pay for it, through donations, bequests, memberships and user fees. An indoor pool is a nice thing to have, but it is not a necessity — and not something that should be funded by a tax that everyone will have to pay, whether they use the pool or not.
The BB reported that Osmon has raised the city pool issue again. $4.5 million up front and $50,000 a MONTH to operate it. What is this guy smoking? Raise the sales tax to fund this monstrosity? I think not. Everything is going up. People are strapped buying gas and groceries. The LAST thing we need is an indoor pool. I hope we will take a firm stance against this proposal.
